John McDonnell Leadership Campaign mobilising grassroots support at Labour Party Conference
At the Labour Party Conference in Manchester this coming week John McDonnell will be speaking on a wide range of platforms to generate support from all sections of the party.
Building on the tremendous support from rank and file delegates at the TUC in Brighton, where in a poll for the Electoral Reform Society McDonnell gained 59% of the vote, the John4Leader campaign is now taking its appeal directly to all delegates at Labour Party Conference.
John McDonnell MP said:
"Conference this week gives us a great opportunity to build momentum. We have been astonished at the grassroots response with the office inundated with messages of support and the website receiving over 350,000 hits since launch.
"At meetings up and down the country scores of people who have left the party are pledging to rejoin to help our campaign and the lefts within a number of key unions are already giving us enormous support."
"The plain facts are that we need a radical change of political direction if the party is to reconnect with supporters and win a 4th term, and there is a clear policy agenda around which the movement can unite:
An independent foreign policy, including the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and Iraq, justice for the Palestinians and the scrapping of Trident
Ending of Privatisation of public services, and taking rail back under full democratic public control
Direct investment in council Housing
A significant increase in pensions & immediate restoration of the link to earnings
Abolition of student fees and support for comprehensive education
Restoration of civil liberties and trade union rights."
