Government must listen to low paid

Local Government workers in Unison (my union) have voted by a clear majority to take industrial action over the imposition of a below-inflation pay deal of just 2.45%.

The Government must listen to this appeal. The underlying reason for this vote for strike action is a genuine feeling of unfairness that lower paid public sector workers are being asked to carry the burden of the economic downturn.

Ministers, earning over £100,000 per year will barely notice their pay freeze, but for many local government workers it will mean real hardship.

£100,000 a year is 40,000 over the tax credit threshold of about £60,000 - that's a lot of extra money and most people/families get far less than the 60,000 which the governmnent must then think is a reasonable amount to live on without state help. It also depends whether the amounts talked about are for one individual or for a whole family and whether peopel have got any pensions/shares etc... I think only one in five people get over £60,000 so it's all right for those on £100,000 isn't it? - they aren't going to be affected by this pay deal. I think the same sort of inequality exists in the US - so much for being the riches tcountires in teh world and today's reports about health inequalities were informative. It's about time people's costs were written as a percentage of their income -even as student I knew soemthin gwas srong when my ren twen tup to 68% of my income not including food!

above I meant 68% rent then I had to buy food leaving me with nothin gfor anything else e.g. books/travel etc hence student overdrafts..and that was on a full grant

see Guardian website or paper today - Obama wrote to Tesco in defence of the Tesco workers union...

new labours relentless move to the right is disgusting & enrages traditional labour voters;John Mcdonnell is correct in his appraisal of the situation & the solution; However I think it will require a punishing defeat at the next election to exterminate the
cancer of New Labour; The labour party can then resume its original role as a champion for eglatarian
socialist,democratic values .
I look forward to the destruction of the careerist, authoritarian thatcher lovers who have betrayed the nation who hoped for so much in 97.Die newlabour die!

For the sake of the Labour Party please challenge again for the leadership,John.
With you at the helm Labour will win back much needed votes in Scotland, and would never have lost Glasgow East.
