Shocking result for Labour in unnecessary by-election, says McDonnell
Labour has been defeated in the Norwich North by-election caused by the barring of former Labour MP Ian Gibson from standing at the next election.
John McDonnell MP, LRC Chair, said:
"What is clear is that the Brown / Mandelson stratgey is not working. However hard they spin it this is a shocking result for Labour.
"The first thing that Gordon Brown and the Labour Party NEC should do is to apologise to Ian Gibson and his family, the people of Norwich, and the Labour Party members nationwide for robbing them of a decent, hard-working, principled MP, who was greatly respected in his local area.
"If we are going to learn anything from this defeat, the Prime Minister has to stop obeying the diktats of Peter Mandelson and start listening to the people."

Although Norwich North had special characteristics due to the disgraceful treatment of Ian Gibson, it also confirmed the type of trend in the County Council and EU elections. In Norwich it was widespread abstentions, a turn to certain former fringe candidates, a massive collapse of the Labour vote, a small % loss by the Lib Dems and a modest advance in the Tory %. In a General Election, this would produce a huge Tory victory, with Labour down to 79 seats. But with New Labour still in the driving seat in the PLP, with David Miliband emerging as the new leader after you once more fail to get sufficient nominations.
OK it probably wont be as bad as 79, but it could well only be twice that figure. We have to prepare now for (a) pre-election policy pushes which the party and the public can see and (b) the post election situation. In parliamnetary terms and from a democratic socialist perspective this needs to go as wide as is possible beyond the Socialist Campaign Group. I hope that you are onto the case. It could be now or never.
we still have the capacity to win the next election, but we need to go back to our roots, and forget this new labour silliness.

There has never been anything approaching socialism in this country, except maybe under Atlee and Bevan - and the NHS they founded retains the support of 90% of people in Britain even after decades of the Conservatives and the right wing of the Labour party eroding it through the 'internal market' , PFIs and PPPs.
P.S I was in Norwich campaigning for Craig Murray for a bit over a week.
Craig has great respect for Ian Gibson and so did many other people in the constituency. Craig said he waited to see if Ian was standing as an independent before standing himself and that he wouldn't have stood if Ian had stood as an independent.
John and Harry - you're both right - the Conservative win in Norwich North was a self-inflicted defeat for Brown and the rest of the current Labour party leadership. It was only because of Ian that Labour held that seat at all. Of the other candidates i have to say that the only two who looked up to the job in the hustings debates were Craig Murray and the Green candidate Rupert Read - and of the two Craig was clearly the better. Unfortunately very few people turned up to see those debates and Craig was unfairly excluded from the only televised debate by the BBC on spurious grounds (past vote in a constituency he'd never been a candidate in before).
